Cover Page for the graphic comic book Unleashed. It has a dark fantasy theme. There are broken haunted toys scattered around a fairy at a mushroom table.

In my comic, Unleashed, I explore the concept of female rage. As a woman, I was taught from a young age to be calm and collected. A woman who expresses her emotions is not taken seriously in the real world. Especially when it comes to emotions like anger, frustration and rage. These emotions are too ‘’masculine’’ for a woman, and women who do express them are often described as hysterical. Women who stray from society’s idea of what a woman should be are villainised. For this reason, I chose to portray the women in my comic as mythical monsters when they fight back against expectations and rules that are forced upon them.

With Unleashed, I aimed to showcase women’s anger as strength rather than weakness. All the women in my comic book are dealing with an unfair situation caused by the patriarchal system; instead of hiding away their anger and frustration, it is the spark that fuels the act of standing up for themselves. The extreme ways the characters stand up for themselves should be seen as a satirical dramatisation of what society makes women believe they will be seen as when they express such “unladylike” emotions.
